The tank engine

Does anyone know what modell this "tank engine" was?

I wondered if that was just a movie prop made of plywood for the film. It does give that 'special train' feel with all the armor plating.

When the engineer releases the steam at the German soldiers passing close and the German sergeant bangs on the cab to complain, it sounds like he's banging on plywood instead if 1 inch steel plating to me.

It was a conventional steam locomotive with exterior "armor" built for the film. There are a number of details about the filming at: http://www.railserve.com/trainmovies/

thanks for the link! I am a "railfan"-someone who loves trains and anything connected with them...

True, but one can google panzerzug and see images of the real thing.

That thing was awesome. I've seen pictures of similar military train vehicles but this thing looked so frightening that I assumed it was probably a modified ordinary train, but maybe this was a real one or a replica of one.

Reading the link given here really makes me realize the work that went into filming - unlikely that would be done today, but as I recall in the early-mid 1960's WWII was still very much on the mind of many adults who lived through it - same was true with my own parents...

Sure, sad to see good rail equipment destroyed, but aside from the money to be made as said earlier many still were traumatized by the war and wanted the world to know through film just how bad it was...
