Is Burt Lancaster's character a war criminal? (SPOILERS)

For executing the German colonel in cold blood at the end of the movie? Don't get me wrong, I think I'd have shot the supercilious bastard too but technically it was in contravention of the Geneva Convention, right? If it had come to light he could have been prosecuted. Don't worry though, Labiche, your secret is safe with me!

reply

Labiche is not in the military. It may be murder, but I don't know if it's a war crime.

Labels are of no value. Each situation is different and you have to analyse it independently.

In an ideal world Labiche should have been punished for killing him but under the circumstances it was understandable.

reply

You probably right to suggest that Lancaster's character is strictly a war criminal. But there are no witnesses and he's never going to give himself up to any enquiry.

The winners get to decide what is a war crime and what is not

You don't have to stand tall, but you do have to stand up!
