Don't the stirrups help keep you planted in the saddle? Balance-wise anyway?
I rode a horse a few times, but that's about it for my equestrian knowledge.

The fact I knew the term 'side saddle' means I didnt need to google to know that

I suppose if I google enough it would lead me to a Youtube video demonstrating
