My biggest complaint is the use of dubbing and speeding up playback

A lot of this movie was dubbed. This is a common practice these days but generally done so well you don't notice.

But this just sounded weird and looked out of sync.

Then the speeding up of so many shots. From cars crashing to sharks swimming to the crazy hyper speed boat at the end.

Did audiences fall for this back in the 60s?

You can only speed up film by 10% or so and get away with it. This is like x2 or x3 in some scenes.

Truth is that audiences mostly fell for it. I've seen a lot of films recently that I first saw back in the '60s and noticed things I don't think most people noticed back then.

The disco volante speeding out of control always looked terrible but I guess it would have been hard to make it look at all threatening at normal speed. I never noticed the dubbing when I was a kid but now I know which actors have been dubbed its noticeable.

Actually the shots of the boat at full speed (not sped up artificially) looked pretty decent. I was surprised a boat that old could go that fast.

reply

I meant the shots where you see the projected background from inside the boat.

reply

Including the sped up fight scenes with jump cuts.

reply

Yeah sped up fight scenes look ridiculous.
