Can anyone remember the line uttered by James Fox (playing the British pilot) about his weekly routine when he is asking his girlfriend's father for permission to marry?
He announces his concern that he won't make a very good husband because he has regular appointments most nights of the week, which would prevent him from seeing his wife. One of the engagements was, I think, playing cards on Tuesday.
Could anyone do me the favour of posting the lines here?
RICHARD: Well, I'm soldiering all day, and I'm rather busy in the evenings, too. Monday I dine in, Tuesday's card night at White's, Wednesday I play snook with the adjutant, Thursday—uh—well, we like to end up at Romano's. That only leaves Friday.
RAWNSLEY: Yes, but what about the weekends?
RICHARD: Well, that's flying, sir. That's the only time I've got. [Pause] Well, I could give up my card nights, if you like, sir.
RAWNSLEY: Oh, I don't think that's necessary. We don't want to spoil the girl.
I'm sure "Romano's" refers to a restaurant, but one where the "boys" would go to after a night out drinking and possibly whoring around (at least a little).
Romano's was THE place to be for raffish high life in Edwardian Britain. Yes, see the Romano's thread. It was sort of like Delmonico's in New York, if that helps.
