What is the purpose of the same woman playing all of M. DuBois' love interests (Brigitte, Ingrid, Marlene, etc.)? Is she a secret agent sent to infiltrate various countries and steal their aerial secrets? Or is there some in-joke which I'm missing? Maybe that DuBois is a cad who can't tell women apart?
After watching this movie yesterday, I have the same question. What was the point of that whole bit about M Dubois seeing the same woman, who claims to be different people. Was she the same person and just lying to him about her nationality? Was she really different women who looked the same? What was the whole point of that? :P
I cant seem to figure Irine out either. When I watched it when I was younger I thought she was just pretending to be other people for some reason, but that doesnt seem to make any sense. rance.
According to director Ken Annakin on the DVD, it was a running gag created to give a part in the movie to actress Irina Demick, at that time the romantic interest of 20th Century-Fox head Darryl Zanuck. Both Demick and Zanuck are now dead.
It's a quite evidently a running gag, and nothing more, which I think works brilliantly, and is well played by both actors. I recall in the commentary that the actress was not a big fan of being slapped on the ass (twice?).
And actually, some of the different planes are really same, only slightly altered to make them look different - each plane being so expensive to build - according the director in the commentary. But just like yourself, I seem to recall, as a kid, wondering how she popped up again and again. Now, it's just a very amusing gag. People show national traits yet are the same the world over - very perceptive of the filmmakers - a coming together of Europe, as we've seen with the Euro etc.
My accountant says, "1 + 1, 40% of the time, equals divorce".
I guess it's open to interpretation. I still like to think she was a secret agent/saboteur with many cover identities. Maybe she could even be Mata Hari herself, in a Forrest Gump type of revised history.
