I found the following quote in this link to the movie:
http://www.thedisneyfilms.com/2011/09/those-calloways-1965.html
"While some establishing shots were done in Vermont,
the majority of the film was shot on the Disney Studio lot. The
entire village plus a lake and the family's cabin were built on the
backlot. Since the film takes place in the fall, artists painted
280,000 leaves on the lot to make Burbank look like fall in Vermont."
I haven't seen the movie since 1966 (50 years ago)! Is the movie
set in Vermont or just some generic "North Woods" place?
I recently found my long-lost (over 40 years) copy of "Swiftwater"
(by Paul Annixter alias Howard Allison Sturtzel), the book on which the
movie is based. The book is definitely set in Maine. The book is also
"darker" than the movie. In the book, a major character dies.
