From which Planet came the crew(Carter, Mark, etc)? It wasn't Earth?

In the end, the spaceship is near Earth and the vampires decide to land on Earth. So the Astronauts were not from the Earth in the first place?

reply

That is correct; a "twist ending" in the spirit of the EC Comics line of 1950s. Whether this originated in the original Italian basis short story or came from the imagination of the screenwriters, I am unsure, but it's nifty coda, for sure.

OP..How young are you that you would state the obvious like this ??

reply

This is a twist that has been done to death (especially if you've read a lot of comics) but it's reasonably well done here. Also, we should remember when this picture was made.

In any case, this is a movie to watch more for the visual atmospherics and set design than for the storyline.

We report, you decide; but we decide what to report.

I love that final twist at the end!

There are subtle hints throughout that the crew are not from Earth. Time units are described as "fractions of Megon" or something similar. The burial markers are not like anything on Earth. Not to mention the outfits.

Because they didn't go over the top with these references, the twist comes across pretty neatly.

Yes....but I clearly remember one of the zombies telling the captain, "We know you HUMANS have fought and killed each other for centuries...". Kind of indicates 'earthling'= 'human', I guess, but maybe not.

reply

Other sci-fi stories have humans from planets besides Earth. Human doesn't imply Earthling.

You're a funny guy - but looks aren't everything.

reply

These aliens probably didn't speak "English" either, so "humans" might just be a convenient translation for us earthling spectators.

We heard English (or Italian) for the sake of convenience. Or Bava had a babel fish in the microphone.

reply

hey that could have been cool ending if it

WASN'T FREAKIN SPOILED!!!! THANKS FOR THAT. :P~~~~~~~~

reply

I think you're forgetting that the two "people" at the end of the movie were aliens inhabiting the bodies of the two crew.
So their talk about landing on backward planet Earth didn't prove that the real crew of the ship weren't human.

reply

I think the idea of the ending was to explain where vampires came from.
We had no way of knowing what year it was when they landed could have been the 1700s or earlier depends how far back vamps go.

You're forgetting that the vampires used a telescope or viewer to zoom in on earth and look at it close up before they were going to land, and they saw skyscrapers. This is what prompted them to say that earthers were backwards for still building their buildings out of stone and iron. Therefore it was definitely not the 1700s.

reply

Besides, despite the (American) title, there are absolutely no vampires in the movie.

There's more than one definition of the word vampire. Besides the blood sucking kind it can also mean "sucking" the life out of someone like taking over their bodies as they do in this movie.
