Rank the great songs in this film!

I don't think I need to talk about how significant this film or its music is to both cinematic and cultural history. The songs of this movie are truly a class apart, each better than the other.

Here is the complete list of songs in this film:

- The Sound of Music ("The hills are alive with the sound of music")
- Maria ("How do you solve a problem like Maria")
- I have confidence ("I have confidence in me")
- Sixteen going on seventeen ("I am sixteen going on seventeen")
- My favorite things ("These are a few of my favorite things")
- Do-Re-Mi ("Do a dear, a female dear")
- Lonely goatherd ("High on a hill was a lonely goatherd, Layee odl, layee odl layee-oo)
- Edelweiss ("Edelweiss, Edelweiss, every morning you greet me")
- So Long, farewell ("So long, farwell, I need to say goodbye")
- Climb Ev'ry Mountain ("Climb every mountain, search high and low")
- Something good ("Nothing stands for nothing....Somewhere in my youth, I must have done something good")

If I were to choose my top 5 from them, I would choose (in order of preference):

1. So Long, Farewell
2. Do-Re-Mi
3. My favorite things
4. Sixteen going on seventeen
5. Maria

I would be far more general in my own approach. I love musicals but I feel that in the majority of shows, the best shows are clustered in the first act, and the second is a kind of tag-along. In the case of The Sound of Music, I would say that the songs of Act I are my favourite, and that in my taste, the songs take a nosedive in Act II.

My all time favorite song from "The Sound of Music" is "Climb Every Mountain", due to its powerful message.

It sends the powerful message that one should look for their dreams, and once found, follow their dreams, believe in him/herself, and to give it all that they've got.

They are all gems. Here are my sentimental favs

1. Edelweiss
2. Climb Every Mountain (that scene is so moving)
3. So Long, Farewell (I love the songs that are used twice. The first time was at the party, but the second was at the Festival when they knew they were saying goodbye to Austria)
4. The Sound of Music (that opening scene, perfection, iconic)
5. My Favorite Things

The two Gazebo songs are great too. Love how Sixteen.. reflects the young, fleeting romance, and Something Good reflects the mature romance.

What “great songs”?

“The hills are alive/with the sounds of money”

“Climb ev’ry mountain/Ford ev’ry steam/Folly ev’ry byway/‘Till
you make me cream.”

Treacle meets claptrap.
