The burnt body in Marco's closet

I have seen this movie countless times, but I've never been able to figure out who the burnt body was in Marco's closet. When I first saw it, I thought it was the nosy guy but he showed up during the police investigation. Anybody know???

It looks like a mummified body - perhaps anither ancient set of remains Marco had stolen and was hoping to sell on.
