Forrester's wife

Just watched it last night and was also confused. I'm assuming since another suspect was never mentioned,that he may have done it as they say,"when the balance of his mind was disturbed." Hence ending up in the asylum and he did exhibit signs of mental illness throughout the film. Think that's about as close to an explanation as we're likely to get.
