Why did those two kids pick up the dog and throw it overboard?

My guess is that they were jealous of the dog because it had a better life than they did.

In the book they habitually do horible things.

Perhaps Folke, or possibly because they weren't big and strong enough to chuck the dog's wretched owners overboard?

They are just misbehaved kids running wild.

Because they were nasty. Just finished watching this movie again. Really hoped that those little creeps would end up overboard but no such luck. The movie, despite being termed "glossy" in reviews, has the themes of evil and injustice running through it. Maybe the awful children are there to represent the question of when evil begins, i.e., nature or nurture.
