George Kennedy

This is a great movie - but one of the finest parts for me is Kennedy's great (and largely unsing) cameo as the weary Union army officer. "I do wish you good luck Mr Anderson - I have a 16 yr old son myself. He's in school in Boston... thank God!"

I'm watch it now and I was thinking the same thing.

I met George Kennedy once at an autograph show and had him sign a photo from the movie Shenandoah. He drew an arrow towards James Stewart in the photo and wrote "my hero in life."

Wow. Lovely anecdote.
Thanks. :)

I've always liked George Kennedy in his roles. Even though he was an enemy officer here, he was compassionate and seemed to genuinely want to help the Andersons find "Boy" or whatever his name was. I remember him in a small role in The Dirty Dozen and of course he was terrific as "Dragline" in Cool Hand Luke.

Indeed. And the 'Naked Gun' series too of course showed he had good comic timing as well. :)

One of those great actors from that wonderful era who never seemed to quite break through to the real front line, but was always just 'there,' and so played a real part in making many great films what they are.

That's very true. And like Leslie Nielsen he was equally good at both drama and comedy.

He had a small part in Flight of the Phoenix -- also with James Stewart. He's one of my favorite character actors. He was good in the airport movies too. He played on Dallas for a season or two. The guy really worked a lot.

I agree. Hey, I even saw him in a bit part on the Andy Griffith Show recently. He was a detective or something who was trying to use two bank robbers who had already been caught to lure in two others who were still loose. Of course Barney Fife fouled up and jailed George Kennedy and the other cop while the two bank robbers who were on the loose showed up and helped the two who had been caught escape again...LOL. Ironically, it wouldn't be long before George Kennedy would be playing the part of a convict in "Cool Hand Luke"! : )

I think he won a supporting actor Oscar for Cool Hand Luke.

reply

It was great to see his work recognized - even though early in his career. He was so memorable as Dragline.

reply

Not forgetting him playing Joe Patroni in the Airport films.
