That's debatable.

You forget what you want to remember and you remember what you want to forget.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he wasn't a great big pansy.

It's the racist thing. Ayesha was a based on The Candaces of Kush, a group of black African queens, who ruled over the course of hundreds of years in Kush. TRUE FACT: The Greco-Romans mistook the African name, Candace, as a proper name rather than a title (queen), and believed that the kingdom of Kush was ruled by a single, immortal queen named Candace (there were 7 Candaces). See the Bible, Acts VIII, 26-31, where the queen of the Kush kingdom is called Candace.

This tale of the "immortal" Candace who ruled the kingdom of Kush inspired Haggard to write the story of Ayesha. Of course, he made her white. He's a white man of his time.

Good post Mckmac. And as you said, we always have to remember when the original story was written and the social climate of the time. Can't judge a sixty year old movie by today's standards.

Does anyone remember the comic Brothers of the Spear? It appeared at the end of Tarzan comic books and later in a series of its own. Dane-el was white, the dispossessed ruler of a lost white tribe in Africa, later winning back his kingdom of Aba-Zulu. His queen was Tavane, also white. His adopted brother was Natongo the son of a Zulu chieftain. His queen, when he eventually won his kingdom of Tungelu near Aba-Zulu, was named Zulieka. The brothers had many adventures in pursuit of their kingdoms, and after, often along with their queens.
Of course, Queen Tavane was mortal and a consort, not regnant.
I loved that series, and even though I am white, I liked Natongo and Zulieka better.
