According to your opinion which art form is preferable British-imported shakeasperean theatre or the home grown Bollywood film industry? The question is posed in the movie which although a film seems to side with theatre.

I really want to see this movie. I heard about it on my Blanding Yahoo group. I don't think I have ever seen a Bollywood movie. I am going to track down this movie and after seeing it I will get back on here to give my opinion.
I love questions like this.
I also love England and India.

I highly recommend this movie. It is more modest than latter Merchant-Ivory movies but it is highly lyrical as presentation of a love affair in the context of anlgo-indian relationships.

I've seen just a few movies from Bollywood. I've enjoyed most of them (in particular "Lagaan") but sometimes the musical numbers are TOO MUCH for a westerner who is not accustomed to see the story interrupted each 15 minutes in order to see a musical.

I've seen other "indian" movies but I don't know if they are considered product of the "Bollywood" system, like "Salaam Bombay", "Water", "Neecha Nagar", etc. Because those movies doesn't includes musical numbers and portrays crude and real aspects of the indian society.

Anyway IMO both are good examples of indian cinema.

Both art forms cater to different audiences. However speaking on behalf of people who watch both, I believe that it depends upon one's mood at the time. Too much of either can prove tedious.

Since the English language has taken root in so many parts of the globe, doesn’t Shakespeare belong to the world now? His work places some demands on his actors and his audience, but for over 400 years both have responded. We’ll have to see if Bollywood has the same staying power.

Bollywood's been going strong for some decades now---I don't think it's going away anytime anywhere soon.

I agree. A balanced diet is needed in physical and mental terms.
