Burton, on cheating on his wife: 'I don't understand it....'

"...I don't expect you to. I don't understand it myself."

Uh, it was Elizabeth Taylor???

So using that logic, it's OK for a man to commit adultery with a woman as long as she's beautiful? (As if Eva Marie Saint was a dog herself).

But it's wrong to cheat if he cheats with an ugly woman?

It was perfectly permissable for Dr. Zhivago to cheat on his pregnant wife with Lara (the gorgeous Julie Christie).... because his wife was plain.

Thanks for clearing this up.

The logic I presented wasn't that it was okay....but that the reason it happened was because this woman was practically the most beautiful (not to mention voluptuous) woman on Earth. Men tend to go for that combination!

It's not really a mystery as to why a married man would sleep with someone who had movie star looks like Liz Taylor or Julie Christie. There isn't too much for the characters to "understand".

yeah, i understand it (l.o.l.)

still one of the best - and most underrated - of the burton/taylor movies.

It's not really a mystery why a married man would find such a woman attractive and be attracted to her but sleeping with her is a different story; especially if that man happens to be married and an ordained minister.

Obviously, Hewitt was weak and Laura was both willing and lacking a moral base; otherwise, one or the other would have put on the brakes and the affair would never have happened. Being tempted is part of life; succumbing to those temptations is where the problem lies.

Whenever we decide to do whatever we want with little or no regard for others, we chip away at the framework of society. Before long, if that type of behavior goes unchecked or enough people succumb to their temptations, society fails. Eventually we all pay the price.

Society may be a good thing, may be a bad thing, but it's really just some $hit we made up, like religion. I get why some people, like yourself, take it dead seriously, even if I find most people who either do or don't indulge in less-than-societal behaviors don't give a heave about society as a whole. Those who "would never" usually do so because they believe "what goes around, comes around", and that they will be cheated on eventually, which is not in and of itself a bad way to behave. I don't believe society breaks down because people cheat, and at least Liz's character was honest. It's only the appearance of faithfulness that matters, really, if you take into account the hundreds of so-called leaders who've engaged in extramarital affairs and tried to hide it (no matter how futilely), so if I were to agree, at least in part, based on "appearance", I'd be inclined to agree only based on the fact that Liz wasn't a sneak, however I happen to admire that in people.

What I'm saying is, Ms Reynolds had her OWN values, and she did nothing wrong. The preacher was the married one, not to mention he was an agent of the institution that places a premium on marriage. He's the one who was wrong, he betrayed his values, or the values he thought he had. "Til death do us part" is, obviously if you look at the divorce rate, not an easy standard by which to live. Some people believe in it, others go along with the program because it's "what you do", and still others don't even pay it lip service.

Humans are not meant to be with only one partner. No animal does except humans. because we use our heads not our feelings.

Burton said..i dont know why..

Yes..because sometimes the emotions and feelings are too strong to rationally tell yourself no..

So you don’t know about wives and hawks. They mate for life.

reply

Agreed, a surprising number of species mate for life.
