Incredibly Sad Moment...

*spoilers*

The scene in which Niiro engages his best friend, Kurihara, is among the saddest scenes in Samurai movie history. Although the two of them didn't have many scenes together, their chemistry was perfect. Every time I watch this movie, the scenes with these two saddens me more and more, knowing what the outcome is. I know it is quite common for best friends and rivals in swordsmanship to duel in Samurai films, but this particular situation wasn't at all glorious or grand. In fact, you could say that Kurihara lost the duel only because of his shock when Niiro attacked. He was only defending, not attacking. The fact that Kurihara left behind a wife and son, along with all his ideals and studies, makes it that much worse.

Agreed - very poignant and sad.

All the more so when it is revealed that the accusations against Kurihara had been a mistake.

IMO, these types of scenes are what raise a good samurai film above the "martial arts" genre.

Agreed, that was really sad. I was hoping that at the last minute something would happen, like Kurihara would get to explain himself and prove he wasn't a traitor, but instead he died without even knowing why his best friend was killing him.
