Howdy explains that he changed his name from Marion, because no one would take him seriously as a cowboy with that name. Marion Morrison was changed to John Wayne, probably for the same reason.

Was this an inside joke? I don't know if it was common knowledge about Duke's name change in 1965.

I'm absolutely sure that was a little joke, and I'm glad you pointed it out. Up until this time I thought he said Marryin as in "Marryin' Sam".
