Where Are The Fans?

I can't believe only two people including myself have posted about this movie. This is one of the all time greatest westerns ever???? What's the deal??

because its easier to like Kuberick, Fellini, Bergman, Kurosawa, Hitchcock, Truffaut, Bunuel and (lest we forget) Visconti. And - if anyone DOES appreciate Hellman - they have to reduce him to art-house vulgarities as a reminder of their own intelligence

“Know why that is? We're too busy being smart-alecks. Too busy in a crazy competition for nothing"

reply

I don't understand you. All your mentioned directors are art-house, just like Hellman. You should see THE SHOOTING and analyze its deep symbolism. RIDE THE WHILRLWIND has actually a plot.

I just saw this movie today, I really liked how Hellman stripped it down to B-western essentials, and it seemed a lot more atmospheric and bittersweet than most of the westerns (save for Leone movies) from the 60s I can think of. I give it 8/10

I haven't seen this one or The Shooting yet, but I want to. There's no DVD in stock for either film, so I may buy a used copy (VHS or DVD). I've heard interesting things about both westerns.

You should do so. They are very good.

Just saw Ride in the Whirlwind for the first time yesterday, thought it was absolutely brilliant, not a great DVD transfer unfortunately, hopefully at some point I'll be able to see a good transfer, this was a bit like watching the film through mud.

reply

Yeah. It's a shame. My copy is the same way.

You are in luck because both of these movies are on the Encore Western Channel on November 1 and 2, 2008. There are other times too so just check your local tv guide for the time in your area.

I'm a big fan of this film. I love how Monte Hellman depicted the old west in such a resolutely bleak, realistic, and unromantic manner. It's essentially a stark meditation on man's hopeless struggle for survival in a grim and hostile world.
