Ghastly soundtrack; anachronistic costuming

A grab-bag of a cast; implausibly contrived psychology; it may have been convincing if filmed by Polanski.

The greatest problem was that Max Schell was playing the secondary role in this movie when he should have been starring as Doctor Zhivago.

I think you're spot on on almost everything.

I'm a fan of the great John Dankworth, but this was one of his least memorable soundtracks. The psychology of the characters was absurd, the whole plot unbelievable and badly constructed (suddenly shifts from mélo to noir), Thompson's direction pedestrian in the extreme.

I think Schell and Thulin's erformances were the only redeeming factor. Eggar's goofy turn was another major minus (particularly in the scene where she plays the gun prank to Max and bursts into that obnoxious laugh).
