Banal Hotchpotch

I must have viewed another film of the same name and date produced by Polanski(after reading others comments) because i found it to be an excuse for a exposay on the insanity of being without thought for the sane mind.(ie the observer).
Was this because so much was left on the cutting room floor ? who knows maybe polanski himself ? Yes we understood Carol was not quite the finished article early on but the character was played so annoyingly lacking in sincerity that the whole film was so laboured and without pace .Catherine Deneuve is undoubtably a fine actress of her time but this was not her finest hour.

Not fully following what you mean. Expose on the insanity of being without thought as an observer? Do you mean that her acting was so bad that it allows the viewer to feel without thought?

And what do you mean Polanski himself?

Just not quite sure what you seem to mean exactly.

I agree certain things in the film however seem labored but nowhere near other films of this genre or that attempt this sort of thing. I think Catherine is playing this way for a good reason; she is repressed and never grew up like a normal healthy person. As for the pace - the pacing seems very deliberate and well timed. Don't agree with that.

Deneuve always played a bit 'insincere'. Her character and casting choices reflected this.
