We Don't Know That The Book Was Finished.

But the author was finished with his life.

Jan Potocki ended his life.
So end of story within a story. Or not.
Perhaps he awakened in another nested story that he wanted to be in.

My version of the novel has an epilog that explains what happens to Alfonso after the Sheik reveals the conpiracy to him. The novel seemed very conclusive to me.

This world is a comedy to those that think, a tragedy to those that feel.

The novel was never published in its entirety during Potocki's lifetime. A proof edition of the first ten "days" was circulated in St Petersburg in 1805, and a second extract was published in Paris in 1813, almost certainly with Potocki's permission. A third publication, combining both earlier extracts, was issued in 1814, but it appears that at the time of his death Potocki had not yet decided on the novel's final form.

If I'm not mistaken the novel has, not unlike Don Quixote, two parts. The movie is based only on the first one.
