Muslims

The story made fun of religions of all kind... I'm not surprised that Buñuel loved this film.

But don't you feel it was especially harsh on Islam, by making it seem like they had a link with the devil? Or do you feel that this is more of a comment/criticism on the way part of the Catholic church portrayed Muslims until relatively recently?

I think the movie and also the book are harsh on religion in general. More specifically, the dominant theme in The Saragossa Manuscript seems to be the duality of things especially of religion and supernatural appearances. On a broad scale, the real or unreal, magical or mathematical, believer or sceptic. Or in closer detail, Muslim or Christian, dead or alive, libertine or pensive.
