Who was the kid?

At one point, a little boy comes to see Alessandro and gives him his report card and Alessandro apparently changes his grades. What is this all about? We thought at first he was a member of the family somehow, but he doesn't seem to fit in anywhere. Was Alessandro giving him music lessons? This was a very puzzling scene.
