The beautiful landscape seem to help tell the story of isolation and dispair.
No neighbors, houses or buildings in view, just miles of mountainous region. The madness of isolaton/confinement and boredom lends credence to the overall palatablity of murder within their household. DOES THE HOUSE STILL EXIST?
Bobbio, a small town in the province of Piacenza (Emilia Romagna, northern Italy).
Marco Bellocchio was born in Bobbio; in an italian interview he states that the movie was shoot in his family's villa:
«Se lo feci non me ne resi troppo conto. Allora ero un ragazzo di 25 anni che si chiedeva cosa fare nella vita. Ho scritto quella storia a Londra senza pensare alla situazione storica o politica, ma solo seguendo la trasformazione della mia esperienza. Per realizzare il film chiesi un prestito alla banca di Piacenza, 20 milioni. Fu un film fatto in casa: mio fratello Piergiorgio, un secondo padre, mi dette grande fiducia. Mio fratello Tonino curò la parte amministrativa. Abbiamo girato nella nostra villa di Bobbio. A sorpresa il film ebbe successo. Persino economico, il miglior affare della mia vita».
I know this is an old post, but I read that ironically enough the house was a country home owned by Bellocchio's mother. He apparently borrowed from his family to make the picture and the interiors were shot there.
