Those drums!

What you hear in the opening credits and at the end, those drums, you'll never forget those drums! The first time I heard them, at the end, after she had been burnt at the stake, I didn't know what it was...granted I wasn't 100% sure it was about Joan of Arc because I came into it just as she was calling the saints, I thought those drums were guns being shot, or something. I mean they just pound in your ears and you don't forget it, does anybody agree?

I agree, but not for the same reasons. I saw this on TCM recently. Perhaps it's a badly preserved film, but the drums sounded like a horrible 1980s toy drum synthesizer for kids. The only effect it had on me was dreading the quality of the rest of the film. Fortunately it wasn't as bad as the drums (and crowd) would suggest.

I have to agree with this, the drums sounded terrible. the sound quality was very bad.

Well I have only seen this on 35mm film but I loved the sound of the drums. It reminded me of Bunuel's use of drums in L'Age D'Or, Simon of the Desert and Nazarin. I think the sound is intentionally stark but I don't know. When everyone's been using a different format it's hard to tell.
