just bedroom conversation

THIS IS FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE ALREADY SEEN THE MOVIE

You know how they switch narrate from time to time? It really sounds like the way people talk in bed. I feel like he just slept with the babysitter when he got home and the whole movie is just the little story/fantasy they make up afterwards while lying together. They are happy in that moment, in their temporary escape, and they are wondering and fantasizing about what could be, if they could feel that way with each other forever. They just met that night. She probably is Fred's niece.

The whole theme of escape, all their talk about love, what is contained in a photograph, in a moment, how long they have been together, how time breaks down--i think all of this supports my idea. This movie undoubtedly has many layers, but I feel like this is what is happening on the literal level.

edit:
And there are clearly times when she is dominating the story (their run and other gangster activities) and times when he is dominating the story (their stay on the island).

I love this idea, thanks for suggesting it.

I had the exact same interpretation. I'm wondering how come there's no more responses on this. It seems like a very plausible scenario and possible intention.
