Has anyone written an in depth criticism about the last duel?

I'd love to read a serious critique of that last duel scene. The way everything comes together for the characters is perfect, and the way they fulfill their roles as they're set up by the plot is practically sublime. And of course the Moricone score really hitting its stride there just adds even more depth. Anyway it just seems like the scene would be ripe for dissecting / deconstructing, shot by shot, piece by piece.

Anyone come across a good film criticism book talking about it, or on the web somewhere?

I cant answer your question, but I always thought that it was an unfair fight for Indio, had he dueled with Mortymer by himself without Eastwood pointing a rifle on the side, he prpbably would have won.

It was probably the fairest duel Indio ever was in as it was more typical of him to have them unfair in his favor. He wasn't fast enough, but he was given the chance to be. It was an added layer of justice with Clint pointing his gun at Indio because he was finally getting forced to endure what he did to others.

Good point.

I think they were just forcing him to play fair. I always thought Indio cheated in his other duels. Only he knows when the watch tune stops and even if the other guy happened to shoot him, the rest of the gang would kill him.

Not exactly a criticism, but a short, humble analysis of the music and direction on my blog:
