Opinions on a remake

What would be your opinion on a remake of this movie? Who would you like to see cast in the various roles and do you feel that being shot in color would change anything about the movie?

I don't think being in color would hurt it, but the time period the movie was set in would have to stay the same or earlier, as social mores as well as the willingness of social agencies to get involved in such situations, Selina's home life, changed soon after the mid sixties era that the movie was made and set in.
Here are my choices for the main roles...

Gordon-Eddie murphy

Mark [Gordon's brother]-Arseno Hall

Selina-Amber Tamblyn [plays Joan on Joan of Arcadia]

Old Pa-William Shatner

Rose Ann-Brett Butler

I've tried to think of names....but I came up with nothing. Just goes to show that APOB cannot be remade no matter how hard they tried!!

The idea cast would be:

DENZEL WASHINGTON.....Gordon
NATALIE PORTMAN.......Selina
KRISTEN JOHNSTON......Rose-Ann
NICK NOLTE............Ol Papa
MONTEL WILLIAMS.......Marc
DELTA BURKE...........Sadie

Since interracial love is common today(i love it),i believe a remake of this movie would be out dated now.

As a Made-for-TV on Hallmark Channel (since most of these players could not draw enough for a major motion picture release:

Gordon Ralfe: Hill Harper

Selina D'Arcey: Thora Birch

Rose-Ann D'Arcey: Marcia Gay Harden (with no makeup and a little padding)

Ole Pa: Richard Dreyfuss (If he could swallow his pride and take such a role. If not, Chris Cooper.)

Mark Ralfe: Shyheim Franklin

Sadie: Judith Ivey (an underrated actress)

reply

I think the movie would work because like many have said, interracial relationships, especially between african americans and caucasians now is so common, you are gauranteed to see one every day. Movies deal with past events and fantasy, and as long as the movie sticks to it's roots while showing it's a world that no longer exists, it can still be rather entertaining.

Gordon: Jamie Foxx or Will Smith
Selina: Katie Holmes or Scarlett Johannson
Rose Ann: Meryl Streep
Ole Pa: Ian Holmes or Brian Cox
Sadie: Anjelica Houston
Mark: Omar Epps

What do you think?

Gordon- Blair Underwood
Selina- Sarah Polley
RoseAnn- Bette Midler
Ole Pa- George Carlin
Sadie- Roseanne Barr
Mark- Aries Spears

How's that??

It's all about the corned beef sandwiches and pineapple juice

reply

How 'bout:
Mike Tyson as Gordon
Kirstie Alley as Roseann
& Paris Hilton as Selena

(I don't know about you, but I'd love to see Paris Hilton get into a slapfest with a zaftig Kirstie A.!!!)

reply

BUT SERIOSLY - I read where George Clooney was thinking of doing a made-for-tv remake of APOB...with Don Cheadle as Gordon (a great choice, but no one compares to Sidney Portier!).

& Paris Hilton as Selena

Oh God.....

OH GOD NO! NO REMAKE! This is a classic that cannot be made any better. Untouchable.

reply

Besides, this is a movie that worked in 1965, but would not work in 2006. Times have changed too much.

If they did a remake of this the 2 perfect main cast members should be:

Gordon-Cuba gooding jr. or will smith or EVEN ME!!!!!(I'm planning to be an actor and think i be perfect and i'm black)

Selina-anna paquin(no one else)

reply

i don't think they could do a remake of APOB!! It is an amazing movie w/o people trying to fix it up... no body could replace sidney poitier!! NOBODY!!! He was and is an amazing actor and it wouldn't work. i love this movie and i hate it when hollywood thinks that we need to make the classics better. THEY ARE FINE AS CLASSICS!!!! THAT"S WHY THEY"RE CLASSICS!!!!!!!!!
and to respond too rharrison05, i plan on becoming an actress/writer and i'm white, but i wouldn't want to play selina. partially because of all the criticsm i would get from old movie goers. they would say that i would never live up to the original actress and i would become resented. trying to become a character that will always remain sidney poitier in everyone's eyes would not work for any future career you plan to have. in fact, it would most likely destroy it before it even began.

Taye Diggs - Gordon
Samantha Morton - Selina
Rose - Brett Bulter
Kris Kristofferson - Old Pa
Wesley Snipes - Mark

One of my all time favorites. Remakes can be made, but for this movie in my humble opinion you can't improve on the original cast. Elizabeth Hartman was perfect for the role and may she rest in peace. And how can you improve on Sidney! Hollywood will just ruin it, but then again it's just my opinion.

Gordon - Scatman Crothers ---- but since he's been dead for 20 years --- Derek Luke;

Mark -- Donald Faison;

Selina -- Jessica Biel;

Old Pa -- James Coburn -- but since he's been dead for 4 years -- Nick Notle

Rose-Ann --- Kathy Bates;

Yeah, and KJohns, um, Eddie Murphy and Arseno Hall? Are you crazy? This isn't a screw-ball blaxploitation film from the 1980s. Eddie Murphy is a comedian, and that's all...and frankly he hasn't been funny since 1982. You might as well have MC Hammer and Mike Tyson and OJ Simpson and Snoop Dogg try out for Gordon and Mark then...I don't watch Joan of Arcadia, so I wouldn't know if that's a sane choice...William Shatner? Ehh...Brett Butler? Who's that again?

reply

Gordon- Orlando Jones
Mark- Mike Epps
Selina- Jennifer Love Hewitt
Old Pa- Nick Nolte
Rose Ann- none other than Kathy Bates

I think a remake would be good, but would it have the same social impact it had back in the 60's.

I only saw this movie for the first time last week, and thought it was beautifully made, although we know they probably got together after that year, it would have been nice to see that, but i guess Hollywood at the the time thought they were being pretty bold with the subject matter as it was.

I can't imagine anyone else in Sidney Poitier' role, his moving response to the girl when he found out she knew he was black and loved him still, even though the social times were against such a relationship, as others have said interracial relationships are so common now, no one would blink and eye, unless of course they are bigots which i have still found among my parents generations *le sigh*

reply

The perfect cast (commerically and artistically)

Gordon: Don Cheadle (he has that Poitier air about him)

Selina: Ellen Muth (loved her ever since Dolores Claiborne)

Rose Ann: Tatum O'Neal (watch Wicked Games, she's Rose Ann with money)

Old Pa: James Broadbent (he is SO Ole' Pa, it's not even funny)

Mark: Cuba Gooding Jr. (they'd probably have to make the part bigger for him)

reply

A remake won't be the same. Some things just should not be touched

reply

Meh. It wouldn't have the same punch the original did. I know, I know, people say that about ALL remakes. But thing is, this film was a product of its time and representative of its time era. If they were to remake it, they'd have to change the themes of the movie. They could definitely make a love story about racism and a blind white woman and her friendship/romance with a black gentleman, but it would still have to reflect these current times and racism in this age.

reply

I thought it might be an interesting idea if the races of Selina and Gordon were reversed. The same message can be conveyed. It wouldn't be easy--but done in a way without making White superior or Black inferior. Just two people finding a bond with each other.
