This part of American history is before my time (I was born in 1962), but I believe that considerably less stigma was attached to romantic relationships between whites and Asians. This is indicated also in the fact that there are earlier films concerning such relationships. I was thinking in particular of "Love is a Many Splendored Thing". Okay the actress (Jennifer Jones) was white, but I believe the character she was playing was a half-Asian woman who falls in love with a white man and the film features interracial kissing. Also, the World of Suzie Wong, with the title character played by Nancy Kwan (herself half-Asian) involved an inter-racial relationship and featured kissing. By coincidence both films star William Holden as the white lover. I have never seen "Sayonara", but I know the story involves romance between white American men and Japanese women.
