This Movie is Colourful, if nothing else

One could probably use this film as stock footage for a documentry on 1960's Hawaii. Plus, the picture quality is a lot better than quite a few other "let's put a singer in a film" films (most of which were in that dreaded Eastmancolor, while this movie is in one-strip Technicolor).

That's about as much as you can say for this movie. It's colorful and the scenery is pretty. And Suzanna Leigh is quite tasty eye candy, especially in a bikini. Aside from that, this is one of the worst of Elvis' post-Army travelogue pictures, and has him singing some REALLY bad songs.

All the universe . . . or nothingness. Which shall it be, Passworthy? Which shall it be?

Yeah, the songs are indeed pretty bad. Though sadly the "Speedway" soundtrack is even worse IMHO.

"Speedway" had a nice jazzy ballad in 'Who Are You (Who Am I)' as well as a slightly interesting rock number in 'Let Yourself Go' (which Elvis even resurrected for the Comeback Special, but was cut). "Paradise Hawaiian Style" has absolutely nothing, unless you count the so-bad-it's-good 'A Dog's Life'. I don't know if I've thought about it before, but even the worst of his soundtrack long-players had at least one halfway decent ballad. And this one doesn't even have that; in fact, no pop ballad at all, just one horrible snails-paced Hawaiian-themed snoozer ('This Is My Heaven'), which may or may not be about a romantic love interest in addition to the wonderfulness of Hawaii, who can stay awake through it long enough to tell? Of all his musicals, only this one and "Easy Come Easy Go" (which spawned an EP) didn't feature a love song.
This entire project was an abomination. And Elvis well knew it, he never appeared so overweight and obviously disgusted on film as he does here.

he never appeared so overweight... on film as he does here.

Get real. I just saw it last night and he's not "overweight" in the least, unless maybe you compare him to a stick of the same height.

99.9% of men would kill to look as good as Elvis in this film and the same percentage of women would want to be with him.

James Shigeta is very handsome too!

"It Happened at the World's Fair" had a great song, "Relax", that Elvis sang while trying to seduce Yvonne Craig. It's a mystery why it wasn't a hit.

There was two-strip Technicolor in the 1920s and early 1930s. Then there was three-strip Technicolor. There was no "one-strip" Technicolor. There were one-strip color films that were processed by Technicolor, but they were not actually Technicolor.
