A bomb falls perfectly in the bomb-sized hole to blow up the entire Nazi rocket center? WTF

You obviously missed the Freudian subtext of the whole film.
The film is not meant to be taken literally, but as an allegory concerning the treatment of homosexuals by the military establishment.
I call your attention to the mysterious bandage that suddenly appears on George Peppard's forehead towards the end. This is a brilliant reference to fascism and a blatant endorsement/criticism of macho, homo-erotic "head"-games.
These gritty subtextual performances combined with the mise en scène are what makes this a tour-de-force of subversive cinema!
That's why "Operation Crossbow" is still recognized as one of the great films of the 60's.
