TOP 250

Seriously, why this isn't on imdb 250? Not only that it heavily deserves it, but also based on its rating it should somewhere around 100-150th place. What is wrong with the rating, does anybody know? I mean look at Simpsons, it has average rating of 9.1 with same number of votes and is on 131th place. I don't get and think it is unfair.

YEAH, the rating process of the imdb IS unfair and helps big pictures, but neglects smaller ones with lesser votes (I read an explanation somewhere, but don´t remember where). Basically the number of voters lead to the outcome that recent movies, which are known by more people and get more votes, are in the top 250, while better but old movies with equally high ratings but less voters/raters are not.

Understoood? No?!

Well, I do NOT understand that either ... what has the number of voters to do with the quality of a picture ... ???

I´d see it even vice versa, actually often THE CONTRARY is TRUE (the less viewers the more complicated but often also the better is a picture ...).

Remember that this list is for the majority, as this is the largest film site on earth. Should the Top 250 reflect them, or the couple of hundred people who bought this from Criterion? This may very well be among the 250 greatest films ever, but for IMDb's sake, it's not up to the major minority to make that decision.

reply

Oops, how could I overlook that ...? :-))

Anyway, you are not right - sorry - cause this movie does have well over 1000 voters/raters and the argument, that a minority should not be able to put a movie among the best ones looses its justification at a certain point. OK, maybe 10, 20 ore 100 voters should not be able to do that, but at well over 1000 ... ?

Anyway, if we go on in this argument, we´ll soon discuss the procedures of democracy and decision-making and how they could apply to the IMDB, smile.

Well, my problem actually is not that imdb favors big pictures, I understand it, but rather fact that based on its rating, it should be it the top 250.

reply

Yes, I know, but FOREIGN and "OLD" pictures are hardly seen by anybody and even if the few who are privilieged or educated enough to have seen it, vote for it, it´s not enough and the reason is the said one. :-( That´s my problem. :-)

Not only with this one, but eg I´M A FUGITIVE FROM THE CHAIN GANG is one of the best 50 IMHO and also not where it belongs ...

If people were to tell others to watch the film, then you would probably get some more votes.

Try and promote the film to forums and get people to vote for it!

Precisely. I've read reviews here and on netflix (forgive me, I'm a member) and one huge and galling complaint I often read is this: "I rented this because it was highly recommended. They didn't tell me it was subtitled/black and white!" Pretty damning circumstances in this day and age. Often the follow up comment is "If I wanted to read, I'd have picked up a book." Take that any way you will. Heh.

On a bright note...the Simpsons Movie (and MANY like it) seem to go through a filtering process on IMDB. They start out really high (top 100 or so) for the first few months, then drastically drop as people's enthusiasm wanes. The good thing about movies like this is that they keep their ratings high while a lot of the current pop-movies start high then fall and are forgotten. Maybe when this one reaches 3000, it'll make it to the list and jump over a ton of others on the way.

Personally I’m not to bothered with the Top 250 list. When I became interested in REAL cinema the list was of great use to me. It introduced me to directors like Bergman, Fellini and Tarkovski, films I wouldn’t have seen if I just listened to the local videostore clerk. But I also know a lot of people who where bored by Solyaris and gave it a 1 rating. It’s a matter of taste - but for all it’s flaws I do like to see good films receive a high rating.
I believe these hidden gems are to be found, admired and -if you know a person who might appreciate it- passed on.

I walked into this movie when flicking through IMDb pages looking for Eastern European films about the war after seeing ‘Come and See’ by Elem Klimov (a film that is on that ‘list of lists’). So I it helps… but I’d rather have a great film appreciated by some people than a great deal of people not appreciating it at all.
