The shop - a going concern with stock.. or not?

Sorry, I was confused at one point.
Early on, Tony is told he has been duped into running the shop - that it is a dead loss, and the button boxes are opened to show there is no stock. It is said that the 'other jews' have taken it all, implied that the jewish community have stashed the wealth away.
Ok, so we can see that a small run down button shop may not exactly be a gold mine, and maybe that concerned others will be protecting what assets the owner has. We know the others in The jewish community aresupporting her. I can even see that this could be construed and misrepresented by the anti semites as 'stashing away'..
But then we see a busy day, the shop is crowded, lots of customers buying things, money taken.. and all the boxes are seen to be full, plenty of stock..
Did I miss something? I dont think that was the 'hidden support'- they seemed genuine shoppers, and that dosden't answer where stock suddenly appeared from..

Actually, he says "they've already divided all the good Jewish shops among themselves". "They" being the "Aryans", not the Jews.

I imagine she's trying to keep up appearances, pretending to be better stocked than she actually is. Trying to sell what she has, even if it's not exactly what the customer came looking for. Something like "I can't match this button, but I'll give you a great price on a whole set of these button! It'll be like a whole new garmet!"

This was posted a long time ago, but it is SO inaccurate, I must respond. What is told to Tono, is that he has been given a shop with no assets, thus showing the empty boxes. That the others (his brother in law being the leader) have taken over the rich shops, for themselves.

It is also revealed, that the others in the Jewish community have been supporting the button shop and it's owner. Because they believe Tono will be kind, they agree to pay him a weekly stipend, to keep up appearances that the shop is a going concern.

Of course, the fat cats KNOW there is nothing to be gained there. That's why the brother in law sticks his nose in, when Tono is refinishing the furniture.

As someone else pointed out, there is a little stock, probably supplied by the other shop keepers in the community.
