Better then Schindler's List or Life is Beautiful?

Just wondering what people think of this film as compared to these rather recent Holocaust films?

This is a definite masterpiece I just finished watching some minutes ago and was totally moved by it. Definitely a 100/100, and a must in My Top 30, maybe even 25, but I have never seen a better Holocaust movie than Schindler's List, the most powerful and thought-provoking film ever, also with a 100/100 (Top 5).

La Vita È Bella is on My Top as well, and gave it a 10 here in IMDB (99/100). It's so smart and funny, and yet so sad and moving. A must-see contemporary classic! Even so, the magnificence of Obchod na korze will hardly ever be topped. One of the best movies ever made, and unfortunately to unknown and ignored by modern society. Schindler's List has that honor, but Obchod na korze came incredibly close. I actually prefer these 3 movies (lets add Der Untergang [99/100] just because I totally love it :) over The Pianist, which is also a great film though. Thank you very much Criterion!!

Very true I forgot the Pianist and Der Untergang was also incredible: it captured the last days in Hitler's Bunker absolutely perfectly, even the characters looked like the real people they were portraying. All terrific films.

schindler's list is about a man in a good position. obchod na korze is about PEOPLE. and i'm with a critic that said: Schindler's List looks like a child next to this.

To my eye it is better than both. Schindler's List is by far the best 'Hollywood' treatment of the Holocaust, but it disintegrates into Spielberg sentimentality at the end. The Shop on Main Street has an ending that is both horrifying and transcendent, and offers a much better insight on how normal ordinary people can do horrible things. Life is Beautiful is not in the same league with either.

The Shop on Main Street is a far far stronger film than any holocaust film coming out of Hollywood. After seeing this, those films just seemed bland, I mean this has everything they have and so much more.

I liked both Schindler's List and Life is Beautiful, but I prefer this movie over both of them. The things that were portrayed in this movie were far different than in the other two, though, making them not easily comparable.

It's personal preference but for me this does not pack the same emotional punch as the other 2.

Well I think you'll find you are in a minority of one. Some ridiculous comments there warped like a trout.

I give it a solid 9/10

This is a fine film and notable as an early portrayal of Holocaust guilt. But it's simplistic in terms of plot and filmmaking, and nowhere near Schindler's List on any level. People who equate the two or sell this one as better are doing it a great disservice. Frankly, I was disappointed enough from expecting a more fully realized performance from Kaminska based on her Oscar nomination, and I certainly wasn't expecting another Schindler.
