where does this film take place?

Does anyone know what town this is either filmed in or takes place in??

peace, love, and prague

It takes place in Slovakia which is south of Poland.

Modern-day Sabinov, Slovakia, apparently. (Check your left-hand margin on the main details page) :)

I caught the last half of it on TCM this past midnight. Oh, man. I cannot believe I've missed such a hidden gem of a film. I too wondered throughout the whole film where this was taking place. I could not quite make out what language they were speaking and their names were strange. I was thinking Eastern Europe the whole time, so right after the movie ended I went to check here. Thank bog for the power of the intarweb! It would've driven me crazy not knowing. Eventually I'm gonna get this film and showcase it at the university for students.

It's an excellent film, I agree... I do believe the opening credits include a national stamp, if you see it from the beginning.. definitely see the first half if you get the chance - the plot and character development is very slick and effective, with humorous moments thrown in, too... the scene where Tono brings home the supposed bounty of his new aquisition is comic and sad at the same time, his wife delighting in what she thinks are the (seized) profits.

It does take place in Slovakia, which is a country I have travelled a great deal. I was wondering about the actual town it was filmed if anyone knows. I was trying to find out which town it was filmed in, more out of curiosity as to whether I'd been there.

Any "behind the scenes" buffs out there? lol

I don't know about being a "behind the scenes buff" but my directing prof showed this film to us this week. He knows (er, *knew*) the director personally.

A little known fact, Kadar apparently *hated* the music used in the film. He also preferred his next film "Adrift" to this one.

I too met Kadar in the 1970's. I was a film student at USC and he came to speak to our class. I stayed afterwards to thank him for making one of my favorite films of all time.

I just watched this last night. I bought the DVD on recommendation from some Czech colleages. I don't know if the DVD is available in western Europe, I bought mine in a shop in the Czech Republic (the movie has English subtitles).
