Nit picks (spoilers, of course)

Just some of the things that sort of bothered me based on the last 1/2 hour that I was watching. I've seen it before years ago, but TMC had it on and I thought I'd watch the tail end of it for the sad ending.

1. What's up with the clean, almost new uniforms? Nobody's soaked in sweat, or shows the effects of months of fighting or living out in the sticks.

2. Walker shooting at what appears to be a shark coming up behind one of the Japanese fishing in the water. The problem is that he's so far away from the action that it would be hard to see what's really going on. He doesn't run to the guy in the water to warn him or to get a better shot at the shark. The Japanese officer is behind Walker and thinks that Walker is going to shoot the guy then realizes that it's a shark and he too starts shooting at it with his pistol. How acurate would that be at that distance?

3. The final battle at the end. Four marines get killed while the Japanese get wiped out. The weird thing is that the remaining marines forget their dead buddies in front of them and spend more time on figuring out why the Japanese decided to do a suicide attack. Also, Walker orders two of the marines to get the bodies for burial at sea as if they were just another piece of equipment to grab on the way back to the ship. I think there would have been a little more emotion other than tired faces.

I agree with all of your points, albeit three and a half years later (sorry!) I only saw it yesterday, first time since the Sixties).

Regarding collecting the bodies, my thoughts were two guys singled out for the job? Why doesn't everyone pitch in? Two guys lugging a bunch of dead bodies while the others chat about existentialism? That's bad man-management!

And regarding the uniforms, Sinatra crudely amputates a soldier's leg and emerges with a little sweat but not a DROP of blood on him. He sold himself short, he was obviously far more than just "a band aid man".

It was full of stuff like this, as were most Sixties movies, but it's still fun to point them out.

Awight we're The Daamned we're a punk baand and this is called Carn't Be Appy T'day!

Picking up a couple of years later PurpleProse; right near the end when in the course of the Americans being "rescued", they are ordered by their rescuers on the restored radio to finish off/capture the remaining Japanese before they are picked up!

Wow! High expectations of the Americans? Their numbers have been decimated by this time any way and there's still work to be done. Great to see the changed Lt. Blair protesting the order.

I mean I'm sure fresh troops off the destroyer would be expected to do any mop up operations, not the crash-surviving cast-a-ways.

It's quite a fascinating film for it's time, but definitely not without fault.
