The Toilet

Did anyone notice there was an aversion to calling the toilet what it was? Was there a reason for this (modesty)? I recall hearing that the first time a toilet was shown in an American movie was in Hitchcock's Psycho in 1960.

I noticed that they didn't use the word "toilet" in this film. My guess is that it had to do with modesty back then.

In those days, there were certain subjects (or words) which were not used in polite society, including "toilet", and "panties" (which would have been called "unmentionables". These are all words which in some oblique way make reference to either private body parts or bodily functions. Only a few years prior to this movie, even the word "pregnant" would not have been used -- only phrases such as "in the family way" or "expecting". Saying those words aloud would have been considered crass.

I did find it odd that she had selected pink for the new toilet and tub, when she didn't yet know the gender of the baby.
