Are we to believe Brando was worth exchanging for a major spy?


Okay...it is clear he stole a lot of "funds", but unless the British were going to send that money with him, why would he be worth exchanging a spy over? I mean wouldn't the Bundeswehr prefer someone who was of intrinsic value like a good fighter, or agent, or general of theirs? Brando's character just wouldn't be worth all that at that point in the game.

If it were a James Bond spy film, then maybe it would be the case. But the job needed a specialist, not a spy. Trevor Howard defines the military profile of the Brando character clearly in their scene together.
