Intriguing movie. However...I am no engineer, but I am thinking he could have just cut the wires instead of having to go to each explosive charge and disarm them all. The cabling to the scuttling bombs seemed kind of openly lain out. A snip here and there and that part is over. I know that idea is all made irrelevant by the ending, but...

I /believe/ he was also concealing his work. On immediate inspection the wires appear attached. Why use electrical tape, for example? Not shown in detail but that's what I gathered he was doing.

Also, such systems have test functions to look for cut or broken wires, so even inside the box he'd have to fuss with it to make it not fire, but appear operational. Not shown in the movie, but that may be what was intended from the script, or even filmed and just edited out.
