Warren Beatty miscast as singing comic

Watching LILITH and MICKEY ONE back-to-back, I can see why it took Warren Beatty so long to establish himself. He is handsome, and has a presence, but he is no actor and he is terribly miscast in a role that George Segal (yet to become the rising star he would be in 1966) would have excelled at. Another actor that would have been fine was Dustin Hoffman, though Hoffman couldn't really do the romance, or the singing, but he could handle the comedy and angst -- he is an actor, and one of the rare ones --like Segal -- would could do comedy AND drama.

What were they thinking when they cast Beatty in this role? No wonder why he had to get control of his own projects, and was in so few films. I can only think of one film that he didn't direct or produce, McCABE & MRS MILLER, that he was good in.

This movie would have been nonsensical no matter who played the role.

But this studmuffin in the title role makes the characater utterly implausible.

Warren Beatty is excellent as Mickey One. No other actor could have done it better.
