deleted scene

does anyone know the name of the girl in the deleted scene? she is absolutely stunning.

Which scene are you referring to? The scene in Prague where Mila is trying to get into the girls window? Yes that girl is beautiful, looks a bit like a young brigitte Bardot, but this scene is not cut from my 88 minute VHS tape. Just wondering if this is the girl you mean..

reply

That's the one. I think it was the only deleted scene on the DVD I got from Netflix. I thought the scene was great on its own, but I understand why it was cut it in this version. It was a bit gratuitous and shifted too much focus on the boy. Also, the girl was so heartbreakingly beautiful I probably would have spent the subsequent five minutes just thinking about her.

Yes, the girl was quite beautiful, and I can't tolerate this new trend of cutting old, classic films for dvd release. I think movies should be preserved in their original form. I think that scene with Mila and the girl outside the window is absolutely important; it shows what Mila is about, in contrast to what the girl sees him as. she romanticizes a boy who is basically out for a good time, and who has easily moved on after his encounter with the girl, by chasing after this new girl. Also the fact that the new girl is more typically beautiful than her, makes her plight even more sad. Not to mention the fact that it is fun to see Mila fail at his girl-getting game for once. It is a mystery why they would cut anything from this, perfect film.

I can't help but think Milos had some say on the dvd release, as I'm not sure what the production company would stand to gain by cutting out a three minute scene, when it's already a critically acclaimed film, and it's legendary director is still alive. It would be a ballsy move by an executive to say the least.

It's an interesting point you make about the new girl being more typically beautiful, and I completely agree with your reading of the scene, but I think that point was expressed in the earlier scene where Milda is at another banquet doing the same routine he did with Andula. That being said, I love the scene too, and if I had originally seen this masterful film with that scene in it, I might very likely share the same view as you.

Just saw an original cut in the theatre on monday and this scene was not in it. Maybe they added it for the vhs and restored the original cut for the dvd.

reply

After just watching the Criterion release, I agree with the scene being cut. When Milda arrives home in the early morning he looks like he has just been fooling around with a girl, not being chased down the street stocking footed.

One question for Czech speakers: What is the right spelling of Mila's/Milda's name?
I have seen this movie on TV and 2 different DVD's, sometimes this character is named MILA, some other times he is called MILDA (IMDb lists his name as Milda).

Obviously I can't speak two words in czech but for me it sounds like MILA without the "D".

Help!

As a native czech speaker, I think "Milda" is the nickname for people named "Milan". I know there are websites that link it to a feminine Lithuanian goddess, but that is probably not the appropriate attribution in this case.
