This could never be remade by Hollywood today. It flies in the face of everything Hollywood "Film by committee" loves. It has raw emotion, dealing with courage, cowardice, love, and honor. It wont appeal to the shallow teens of today whom the whole dumb-everything down to a PG-13 rating just to fill seats. It can't be serialized with numerous sequels, or merchandizing rights. No cgi or explosions. No glib hero's speaking with a 6th grade vocabulary with a pointless female love interest to fill the other seats with chicks.

The cold dead heart MBA-tailored suit wearing *beep* that run that machine are incapable making anything than steaming turds they call movies.

I saw this first time when I was teen in 1980. I loved it. And I saw this again today. It was still good. Not so much than back then but still good movie. I gave 8 to it.

Interesting question. I don't stay up on the actors and actresses - for me movies are more than anything about great stories. If I had to venture a guess, as to someone young, capable of a physically demanding role and with a passable British accent - maybe Nicholas Hoult?

But yes, I'd go if they remade this one. There's plenty of action, a scrap of a love story that could be expanded just a tad to make the movie more marketable and perhaps even more tragic and some "bromance" going on as well. The one sticking point being the romantic nature of Jim's ideals for himself.

Would today's audience get being such a romantic that you would sacrifice your love and your life to live up to such a perfect standard of personal integrity and courage? It'd take a bit of work to make them feel some ambivalence about whether or not Jim's demise was a triumph of character or just a foolish tragedy. The natural inclination might be to see Jim as a fool and that ruins the heroic aspect of the story unless that's kept in check.
