Still a classic

This movie is still a classic and does an excellent job of bringing the novel to life. Great performances, great scenery, and timeless themes.

I know that largely due to political correctness and shame felt by the former colonial powers about their past no one is in a rush to make colonial epics anymore, but it's a shame, because movies like this deserve to be given their place in the canon of classic movies.

I'm surprised at how circumspect people seem to be, in their praise of this movie... Then again, I haven't read the novel, so perhaps that swings it!

I still think that it stands as an excellent example of a movie, in its own right.

Most definitely. It's great even as a standalone. Sort of like The Shining - different from the book in certain respects but does a great job of "doing its own thing."

I really liked this too. Didn't read the book but found it a well mounted adventure epic.
