Liza Minelli instead of Natalie Wood - Too Cruel

I agree with posters in another thread, Liza Minnelli would have made a much better Daisy Clover than Natalie Wood. She was a much better singer and closer in age to the character. However, if the casting director new of Liza Minnelli and sent her the script it would have been a cruel blow.

Whether the author was inspired by the story of Judy Garland or not, the parallels between the fictional Daisy Clover and Judy run close. Judy grew up in poverty due to her father's alcoholism and early death. She started singing at seven and started in the movies at 14. She did wait until she was 18 to get married, but the studios pushed pills at her. Maybe Liza would have enjoyed the role, playing in a fantasy that takes a situation close to her mother's and turning it into a fantasy where the character goes on to a normal and happy life. However, making this movie while her mother was relapsing into drug addiction and alcoholism and only four years before her mother died may well have become a miserable and cruel memory.

You certainly lead an active fantasy life. You cast Liza Minnelli in the movie, and then put her through the ringer as a result. Geez!

I actually thought the movie was based on - or at least inspired by - Judy's life.

Even the part about marrying a gay/bisexual guy (and Judy had a gay father, too).

I never thought about Liza - but she would have been a good choice.

However, you're right: it would have hit too close to home.

(Let's not forget that Judy was originally slated to play "Helen Lawson" in the "Valley of the Dolls" - a part which would have required her to berate Patty Duke's character of "Neely O'Hara" about her boozing! Some say that "Neely" was indeed directly based on Judy's life.)

"Don't call me 'honey', mac."
"Don't call me 'mac'... HONEY!"

I hadn't ever thought of Liza Minnelli for this part; however, now that I do, I think she would have been better. As much as I love Natalie Wood, she was far too old for this part, and vocally inferior to Minnelli.

Tuesday Weld. But really, they needed an actress in her teens, not in her late twenties, no matter who it was.

Tuesday would have been great. She would have only been 21. I read Patty Duke was considered for Daisy.
