Eddington an aviator?

I checked the blog titles and didn't see this issue; sorry if this is a repeat.

I haven't watched the film again to check this, but I have looked at numerous images from the film online. In none of these do I see Eddington wearing the wings of a Naval aviator. I presumed a Naval aviator would be assigned duties that involved flying or command of flyers, like on a carrier. But when we first see Eddington, he is the XO on a cruiser. He seems to be an officer whose career has been on surface ships.

But he pilots the PBJ off on his suicide reconnaissance mission as if he has had all the training requisite and seems to fly it with skill.

Was there some explanation of this in the film that I missed?

Eddington used to be a Naval aviator, but turned in his wings and returned to the surface fleet because of his drinking and unhappy marriage.

I joined the Navy to see the world, only to discover the world is 2/3 water!

Thanks. I missed it then.
