the necklace

What was with Joan Crawford's necklace in this movie? Who wears jewelry like that except someone like Joan! I have never seen anything like it in my life.....I remember seeing this film as a child in the Drive-In with my parents....cannot believe they took me to see a movie like this as a kid, along with many others...but the memory of it stayed with me although my adulthood until I was able to buy a copy of it on ebay....it still remains one of my all time scary movies...great to watch alone on a stormy night with a big bowl of popcorn :) But that necklace!!!! I still cannot get over it...lol

Would love to know whose idea that was and why. Were women supposed to have seen that and gone 'oh! I've got to have one of those!' and it cause a fashion craze?

Yea, want to have a necklace a 60-yr-old woman is wearing when she is murdered.

reply

It was less a necklace and more like a breastplate.

That is what I have always thought, one time I didnt say it, someone else did! LOL!

Joan was playing the part of a glamourous but aging seductress. The big 1960s hairpieces, heavy make-up and over-the-top jewelry was her way of attracting the younger man.

Back when this film was released some stars would make inperson appearances
Joan did for Strait-Jacket and this film with the two teens.

I think to get a necklace like that, you pretty much have to plunder some Egyptian mummy's tomb. lol

reply

Well Seeing as it was a Universal film maybe it was from one of the MUMMY features

I did get a bit of a laugh out of Joan's outfit in this picture. Oh, make no mistake---I think she looked great and I actually liked the hairstyle and clothing---made her appear very regal indeed. But the entire look was just so out-of-place for the character (some woman living out in the country at the back end of nowhere); this is a look that would have been appropriate for a sophisticated New York party.

I guess Crawford figured she'd paid her dues with her frumpy wardrobe in Castle's ''Strait-Jacket'' the year before. She wasn't gonna dress like THAT again, even if she was supposed to be living in Hooterville. And her outfit here really shows off her still teriffic figure to great advantage.

reply

Ha! Yes, I was thinking along similar lines myself. I imagine that Joan probably did this one for the money and wasn't thrilled about either the picture or her role in it, so she figured she might as well look good.

And as I said before, she really does look splendid here. Quite regal and commanding; her bone structure photographed so very well both in her youth and in her more mature years.

reply

Yes, she does. And her performance was fine. I saw the film in the early ''70's on ''Dialing For Dollars'' (skipped school to see it) and I loved it then. I bought the DVD when it was released in ''99 and still think it's a great flick. ''Campy'' to some these days, maybe, but I appreciate it for what it is. A tense, atmospheric little thriller that I think is Castle's best film.I've shown it to friends unfamiliar with it, and they like it, too. It's great to watch late at night. The 1988 ''remake''is awful. why did they even bother?.

The necklace reminded me of the Empress Charlotta necklace Rob gave Laura on the Dick Van Dyke Show!

reply

I can just imaagine La Crawford on the publicity trail with those two inexperienced teenyboppers in tow. "I said tea WITH sugar, dea-r-r!" "NEVER cross in front of a star when she's speaking to reporters, honey!"
May I bone your kipper, Mademoiselle?

reply

The necklace served one purpose only: To cover the area around her neck, which looked a lot older than the rest of her.

She could have just worn a dress with a high neckline, but that would have been more matronly and less sexy. So, she went with the low neckline plus huge necklace combo.

Ever see "Berserk"? They hide her neck wrinkles with shadows in that movie.

reply

Not a necklace.....
I call it The Chandelier whenever I watch this film.

"Fasten your seatbelts. It's going to be a bumpy night"

My impression of Amy Nelson: Joan Crawford plays herself. Unruffled iron lady.

Not that it's a bad thing. People went to movies to see a glamorous Joan, that's what they got.

Amy must have really been hard up to chase after a sad sack like Steve. Maybe in her prime, she would have gone for a successful businessman or politician.

No two persons ever watch the same movie.
