The cinematography is a big reason this film worked...

...or, at least, worked as well as it did.

Joseph Biroc was a master of B&W mood cinematography, and had just filmed HUSH HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE (and receiving an Oscar nom for that) before shooting I SAW WHAT YOU DID.

Biroc could give even William Castle movies a creepy dignity, as he did with 13 GHOSTS.

I can only imagine how much better STRAIT-JACKET might have been had Biroc photographed that one...

Strait-Jacket is a MUCH better looking film than this.

You can not be serious.

You may prefer STRAIT-JACKET, but its camerawork is worthless.

Straight Jacket looks like it's being filmed for Perry Mason or some TV show.

Exactly right. Most of STRAIT-JACKET is flatlighted by Doris Day's DP Arthur Arling who gives Joan similarly-blurry close-ups (which don't even make her look any better) with no mood or style to the rest of the movie.

Such a missed opportunity was STRAIT-JACKET.
