Why 8 3/4 name for Americans?

Why is it that they feel they have to change the names of British movies for Americans? Particularly in this case it doesn't make the slightest bit of sense, whereas the original name (Hot Enough for June) makes sense as it's the code message used in the film.

I know may Americans and have American relatives and they are as intelligent as any European I have met, so why do distributors assume they are all morons? Why cater for the lowest common denominator? Or is perhaps they were afraid of turning off the Bible Belt Puritan element as "Not Enough for June" could be, I suppose, erotically suggestive to unclean minds?

Knowing the American Entertainment Industry (aka Hollywood) I cannot see that as their thinking, "turning off the Bile Belt".
First, the vast majority of Hollywood revels in offending the Religious Right; example, the recent Noah movie... I'm fairly sure the movie didn't even mention G-d... The Great Flood must have come from "Global Warming".
Second, if anything, Hollywood would be going for more titillation.

As for the Europeans changing the title... it is more likely they are "dumbing it down for the colonials". Possibly with the addition of looking down their snooty noses.

Distributors generally are the ones who ask for title changes because they know their audience. Likely they thought the film would do better if they played down the romance and billed as a spy film.
