Where Was It Filmed?

Sorry if this has been already been mentioned in this forum, but does anybody have any info on which country this movie was filmed in? I'm going to guess that it was somewhere close to where it's suppose to take place in North Africa. Morocco, maybe?

Although Lumet's films are hit and miss with me, this one was definitely a hit. I found it engrossing from the moment it started and all the way to the finale. Paying special attention to some of the fantastic camera techniques and cinematography makes one appreciate this movie all the more.

While some may have issues with the "shock" ending, I actually liked it. It allowed for the viewer to make their own determination on what ends up happening to all of the characters involved and the consequences thereafter. My guess is that McGrath and King didn't kill Williams, but did bust him up pretty bad, with the end result being that all three of the prisoners present receiving extended sentences.

Thanks for the info on the locations, I overlooked that section on the main page. I like your theory on the conclusion; however, they seemed pretty wound up in that last scene and I can't help but to think Roberts would have had quite a hard time persuading them to let Williams off so lightly. Anyways, great movie -- wish I hadn't waited to long to check it out.

The Hill is set in Egypt I think but it was filmed in Almería & Andalucía in southern Spain. The conditions on set like in the film were primitive combined with temperatures of 46 degrees centigrade (115 degrees Fahrenheit for any Americans who don’t understand centigrade). The standard of living in Spain now is comparable to the rest of Western Europe generally speaking but in 1965 when this film was made Spain was poor & at one point many of the film crew came down with dysentery including Sean Connery. Connery also said of all the films he did he had most fun on the set of The Hill despite the dysentery. The film had a predominately all male cast aside from an old slapper the Commandant was shagging & a fat belly dancer & when they weren’t filming the cast & crew would be getting paralytic in the bars & clubs.

Yeah, would you 'splain that concept for us, Teach? (In return, I'll help you with punctuation - in case you don't understand apostrophes.)

I could be mistaken but the camp appears to be the leftover Aqaba set from Lawrence of Arabia. Which would definitely place it in Almeria, Spain.

According to Ben Manciewicz's commentary on TCM, The Hill was filmed on location in Spain.
